I Should Have Known

Created by Claudia Nicole Benko

The stage is set with a photo series depicting everyday encounters that can seem completely harmless. The point being made is that it isn’t “so black and white,” so obvious,” when it comes to identifying an ill-intentioned individual, who is often adept at manipulation and twisting the perspective of the victim.  This is reinforced in Claudia Benko’s powerful performance, which concludes with her abuser writing the word “guilty” on her body, thereby shifting the responsibility back onto her. The impact of the performance is intensified as this intimate assault unexpectedly disrupts the exhibit space, putting the visitors into the disturbing role of passive bystanders, thereby potentially creating that transformative moment where a deeper understanding develops.
