Dress codes in both elementary and high schools often contribute to the objectification and dehumanization of individuals, particularly girls. Our female students over the semesters have expressed outrage over how they had been sent home for wearing clothes that “distracted the boys in the class” or even male staff members. Arguing that the enforcement of these policies contributes to the sexualization of young women’s bodies, and that males in these institutions should learn not to be distracted, Sabrina Dunn Plouffe “policed the policies” by asking exhibit visitors to post clothes that were banned or messages about their experiences on a clothesline.
